Rapid methods for aflatoxin detection in corn

The presence of aflatoxin, a known potent carcinogen in corn, is a health concern affecting both livestock and humans, hence, monitoring its presence for quality control is necessary.Accurate and sophisticated methods for aflatoxin detection are available. However, they are not suitable for routine analysis involving large samples because they require expensive instrumentation and high degree of technical expertise. In addition, they are time-consuming and very costly. Three simple, rapid and relatively inexpensive aflatoxin test kits (Agri-Screen, Aflascan and FNRI Test Kit) were validated. Among the test kits (TKS), the FNRI tks gave the lowest false response of 19 compared with the Agri-Screen and Aflascan tks with 34% false response indicated its relative precision. In terms of safety, Aflascan got the lowest health risk rating of 4 compared to 5 of Agri-Screen and 7 of FNRI. FNRI tks was costly. A single assay cost P500 for Agri-Screen while P800 for Aflascan. In terms of ease of use however, Agri-Screen was better. It only required 15 minutes per assay while Aflascan and FNRI tks required 36 and 27 minutes, respectively
