Indices for the varietal identification of mango (Mangifera indica L.)

The method focused on the physical characteristics of mango seedlings and on the chemical reactions of mango leaf extract. Results showed that carabao variety had light green and upright flushes while Pahutan variety had light green but downward flushes. Pico and Katchamitha had light brown to light violet flushes. The shape of Carabao, Pahutan and Pico leaves were observed to be narrowly trullate, and the Katchamitha leaves were narrowly rhombic. For leaf size, Carabao, Pahutan, and Pico were relatively the same while the Katchamitha variety was the smallest. The shape of the leaf tip was observed to be narrowly accuminate for the Katchamitha, Pahutan and Pico varieties while the Carabao variety has abrupt accuminate leaf tip. Differences in the leaf aroma were shown in the profiles of the leaf volatiles using the Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In addition, a chemical method was developed to further confirm the identity of the mango seedlings. The leaf total phenolics extract of Pahutan has the most intense green color followed by Carabao, Pico and Katchamitha showed similar yellowish green color. These extracts when reacted with acidified vanillin treated paper gave light pink color for the Carabao variety, pink color for the Pico and Katchamitha varieties, and light green color for Pahutan. It was concluded that the most practical method for identifying mango varieties especially in a large number of seedlings is through the color and turgidity of young leaves or flushes. The technique described can also be applied in identifying mature mango trees
