Molecular characterization of selected Philippine coconut germplasm collection using SSR markers

The Philippine coconut germplasm collection is one of the largest collections in the world. The field genebank holds 143 populations of diverse origin and characteristics. From this collection, 30 coconut populations consisting largely of Philippine accessions and some representative foreign accessions were studied using 20 microsatellite of simple sequence repeats (SSR) primer pairs. SSR markers were used owing to their high polymorphic information content, wide dispersal in the genome and co-dominant nature. The number of alleles observed per primer pair ranged from 5-9. Using polymorphic markers derived from the 20 SSR primer pairs, a dendrogram was constructed which showed groupings consisted with classification based on agro-morphological and geographical data. Eight SSR markers were found unique for six coconut populations, which can be used for the identification of these populations
