Terapon jarbua (Forskal), is a carnivorous fish that inhabits inshore waters and enters freshwater. It is found practically all over the Philippines where it is utilized for food. Examination for helminth parasites (Velasquez, 1975) was done on 162 market-sized specimens (TL=6.0 to 221.2 cm) from Lingayen Gulf in La Union province from January to December 1998. Eight species of helminths were recorded. The mongenean, Diplectanum sp. was taken from the gills while the digeneans Aponurus sp., Lecithichirium neopacificum, L. magnaporum and Torticaecum nipponicum were found in the stomach and intestines. Metacercaria of Rhipidocotyle eggletoni was recovered from the eyes. The nematode Raphidascaris sp. (immature) was found in the intestine, while another nematode species, Philometra sp.was recovered from the ovary. The most common parasites were Diplectanum sp. and Raphidascaris sp. For Diplectanum, the monthly prevalence of parasitism ranged from 43% to 100% with parasites burden of 1 to 121; for Raphidaascaris, 10% to 100%, 1 to 56. The carbivorous habit of this fish is a factor in the occurrence of its varied helminth fauna. Molluscs and other fishes serve as intermediate host of digeneans, while copepods, crustaceans and fish harbor the immature stages of nematodes
