Calorific value and butterfat composition of colostrum and transition to normal milk
2001
Eusebio, A.R. | Aranas, T.J.
Milk samples were collected from six carabaos immediately after calving for ten days. The butterfat composition was determined using the Gerber Method and the calorific value was analyzed by means of the adiabatic bomb calorimeter. Statistical analysis showed that the calorific value of colostrum of the first day was significantly higher (P0.01) than any of the other days of the experiment. There was no significant difference in the daily butterfat content within the ten-day period, although the highest was during the first day. The calorific value and butterfat content of colostrum were 1,722.18 cal/gm and 10.27%, respectively. The data seem to indicate that the colostrum of carabao was on the first 2 days of lactation
