Hybrids from diallel crosses were evaluated in terms of reaction to papaya ringspot virus (PRSV), fruit quality and other horticultural traits. The hybrid Py5 x Py6 was selected after three seasons of evaluation. This promising hybrid is semi-dwarf (92.7cm), moderately tolerant to PRSV, and with medium size fruits (870.0g). The flesh is sweet (11.7 deg B) and yellow orange in color. Its fruit quality and PRSV tolerance are comparable to the check variety 'Sinta'. Py5 x Py6 combines the good characteristics of its inbred parents: Py5, and inbred line derived from a solo type, yellow fleshed, green-stemmed, dioesious Florida accession and Py6, an inbred line derived from a large, red-fleshed, purple-stemmed accession from Taiwan. Both inbreds are moderately tolerant to PRSV.
