Two superior corn varieties namely: USM Var 9 and USM Var 14 developed by University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in collaboration with Centro Internacional Mejoramento Maiz Y Trigo (CIMMYT) was approved for commercial release for CY2001 by the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) to provide corn farmers high yielding varieties with moderate resistance to downy mildew and corn borer. USM Var 9 is a synthetic yellow corn variety with semi-flint kernel type, matures 100 to 105 days and has a shelling recovery of 67-80%. It is moderately resistant to downy mildew and corn borer with yield of 5.53 tons per hectare. The variety was developed using ear-to-row method in half-sib recombination. USM Var 14 on the other hand, is a white semi-flint corn variety which matures from 95-100 days. Shelling recovery is 74-78% and has a semi-erect leaf structure. Yield is 5.05 tons per hectare. This variety was developed using modified ear-to-row method (two cycles) followed by half-sib family recurrent selection (two cycles)
