Varietal response of coconut to sequential coconut toddy and nut production (SCTNP) scheme

The response to sequential coconut toddy and nut production (SCTNP) scheme of four coconut varieties/hybrids at PCA-Zamboanga Research Center, San Ramon, Zamboanga City [Philippines] showed that the dwarf and tall hybrids, Malayan Red dwarf and Baybay tall (MRD & BAYT), Malayan red dwarf and Tagnanan tall (MRD & TAGT) and Catigan dwarf and Laguna tall (CATD & LAGT) produced significantly higher toddy (495-699 li/tree/yr) and nut yield (143-169 nuts/tree/yr) than the tall cultivar 'Laguna' LAGT (364 li and 123 nuts/tree/yr). Varietal differences in terms of the floral and vegetative characteristics of the coconut cultivar and hybrids contributed significantly to the differences in the sap/toddy and nut yields. Based on 20 months production period, the SCTNP palms with toddy and nut yield produced an average annual net return of PhP 246,705, ten times that of the net returns from the common practice of nut production (NP) palms with PhP23,855 from nut/copra yield alone. The SCTNP palms also manifested higher benefit-cost ratio over the NP palms with 1.8 and 1.0, respectively. The processing of coconut toddy into value-adding products (beverage, syrup, sugar and vinegar) offers to bigger opportunity for coconut farmers for increased income due to higher net returns derived from the production and marketing of these products
