Heritability estimates for yield and its components in wheat

Twenty-four wheat breeding lines including a national check (Pirsabak-91) were planted in randomized complete block (RCB) design with 3 replications during 1995-96, at Peshawar. Data were recorded and analyzed on days to 50% heading, plant height, number of productive tillers, spikelets per spike, grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and grain yield for two consecutive years. The genotypes were significantly different for all the traits except number of productive tillers per plant. The genotype by year interactions were significant for all the traits except plant height, number of productive tillers and grains per spike. Narrow- sense heritability estimates for days to 50% heading, plant height, spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, 1000- grain weight and grain yield were 40%, 93%, 35%, 62%, 74% and 24%, respectively. The genotypic correlations of days to 50% heading with plant height and grain yield; plant height with 1000-grain weight and grain yield; and grains per spike with number of spikelets per spike were significant. Breeding lines Jup/Bjy'S'//Ures and Bloudan/3/Bb /7C*2//Y5OE/Kal*3 performed better for most of the traits than national checks, Pirsabak-91 and are recommended for further evaluation.
