Effect of different scarification methods on the germination of almond nuts

Effect of various scarification methods of almond nut i.e. boiling in water for 10 minutes, dipping in cone. Sulfuric acid for 15 minutes, shell breaking with file and control (without any treatment) was evaluated. Almond nuts gave maximum germination percentage (42.0), maximum one month old seeding height (8.30 cm), minimum number of days taken to germinate (56.57) when almond nuts sown after 10 minutes in boiling water during 1977. Similar results were noted during 1998. However, during 1999 almond nuts treated with 10 minutes in boiling water, shell breaking with file or with gentle hammering gave the highest germination percentage statistically at per to each other with means of 42.33, 40.00 and 41.67, respectively. Scarification techniques produced significantly maximum buddable plants from the nuts sown after boiling in water for 10 minutes (40.33) and shall rubbing with file (40.33) and conc. Sulfuric acid treated seed (33.33) than control (20.33) during first year. Almost similar results on the basic of overall performance, almond nuts should be boiled for 10 minutes before sowing under Pothohar climate conditions.
