Evaluation of chickpea genotypes under Peshawar valley conditions [Pakistan]

In order to study the correlation between grain yield and agronomic parameters nine indigenous chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes received front the main chickpea growing area of NWFP i.e. 5 from Lakki Marwat 4 from Karak were planted on November 1, 1995, at the Research Farm of NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar to find out the best yielding genotypes. Grain yield varied significantly from 215 kg ha-1 for LM.C.5 in group III to 1149 kg ha-1 for LM.C.3 in group I. The average values of grain yield in group I (861 kg ha-1) was 40 and 70% higher than that of group II (515 kgha-1) and group III (259 kgha-1), respectively. Days to maturity, pods per plant, dry matter yield and harvest index showed significantly positive correlation with grain yield. The correlation of plant height and 100-seed weight with grain yield was positive but statistically non-significant. The correlation between branches per plant and grain yield was negative but statistically non-significant. Branches per plant showed significantly positive correlation with harvest index.
