Some novel bacterial organisms were isolated from Korean traditional fermented seafood, jeotgal, and studied by a polyphasic taxonomic approach. among them, two isolates have been found to be members of a new genera in this study. Cells of strain JG07 sup T and cocci or short rods in the early growth phase but change to rods as the cultures age. Strain JGO7 sup T is characterized by having the peptidoglycan based on L-lys-D-Glu. The menaquinone profile is characterized by the predominances of MK-8 followed by MK-7 and MK-6. The cellular fatty acid profile contains major amounts of saturated, unsaturated and branched fatty acids. The cellular phospholipids are phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, bisphosphatidylglycerol. The G + C content of the DNA is 47 mol %. The phylogenetic analysis showed that strain JGO7 sup T forms the radiation of the cluster with Planococcus okeanokoites and mcmeekinii. A moderately halophylic round-endospore-forming rod, strain YKJ-13 sup T, was related to the phylogenetic clade comprising members of the Bacillus rRNA group 2 and, particularly formed a cluster with bacillus marinus at 16S rDNA similarity value of 95.7%. The peptidoglycan type of strain YKJ-13 sup T is A 1 alpha based on L-lys-direct. Strain YKJ-13 sup T is characterized by having MK-7 and MK-8 as the predominant menaquinones and iso-C sub 15:0 as the major fatty acid. The G + C content of DNA is 44 mol %. Therefore, on the basis of the data presented, two new genera were proposed, Planomicrobium koreense gen. nov., sp. nov. and Jeotgalibacillus alimentarius gen. nov., sp. nov., respectively, for strains JGO7 sup T and YKJ-13 sup T. In this study, it is also porposed Planococus okeanokoites and Planococcus memukinii be transferred to the new genus Planomicrobium as Planomicrobium okeanokoites and Planomicrobium mcmeekinii, respectively and that Bacillus marinus be reclassified to a new genus Mirinobacillus gen. nov., as Marinobacillus marinus comb. nov.
