Hybrid wheat in Africa
1999
Jordaan, J.P.
Present day hybrid wheat breeding has access to technology that has changed the fate of hybrid wheat. Although the genetic basis of heterosis is still not fully understood, it wil1 playa major role in future plant iri1provement, including wheat. Development has to be based on heterotic groups, and the enhancement of heterotic expression. Developing countries should have access, and must benefit from hybrid technology to secure more food. Opportunities to achieve this should be identified and pursued in development programs.
