Laboratory examination of honeybee colonies susceptible and resistant to American foulbrood

The rightfulness of the clinical choice of honeybee colonies for susceptibility or resistance against American foulbrood under field conditions was verified by laboratory examination. Clinically as susceptible, there were chosen the colonies which died as first under natural infestation and had the most extensive clinical symptoms in brood. As resistant, there were chosen the colonies which withstood infestation in spite of neighbourhood of the other infected colonies. The infestation ran for 3 years. These properties were tested in laboratory using drone brood (section of 140 mm x 75 mm, given into nuclei with 200 g of young bees). The artificial infestation by Paenibacillus larvae spores (100 spores in 1 micro l of inoculum per 1 larva 24 hours old) was carried out. Seven days after infestation, the number of survived and died larvae was investigated. In susceptible colonies 32.3% larvae survived, in resistant ones 61.5%. Nine died larvae with AFB symptoms were found in susceptible group of colonies
