Chromosome complements and standard karyotypes of two frog species: Occidozygo lima (Gravenhorst) 1829 and Rana cubitalis Smith 1917

Chromosome complements and standard karyotypes of two ranid species; Occidozygo lima (Gravenhorst) 1829 and Rana cubitalis Smith 1917, from Amnatchareon province were investigated. The chromosome were directly prepared from bone marrow cells by colchicine-hypotonic-fixation-airdrying technique with giemsa staining. The results of the experiment were as follow: the chromosome number of each of the two ranid species was 26 (2n=26), of which the chromosome forms were divided into 3 types: metacentric, submetacentric and acrocentric. The karyotype of O. lima comprised 3 pairs of metacentric, 9 pairs of submetacentric and 1 pair of acrocentric. However, The karyotype of R. cubitalis consisted of 5 pairs of metacentric, 6 pairs of submetacentric and 2 pairs of acrocentric. Both analyzed karyotypes of O. lima and R. cubitalis displayed chromosome marker or specilized structure. Only in number 12 chromosome pair of O. lima was found secondary constriction in the long arm, whereas, only in the long arm or number 11 chromosome pair of R. cubitalis was found. Thus, this study should prove extermely useful for the studies of Cytotaxonomy and the evolutionary relationship of amphibians.
