Food items and feeding habits of the greenback mullet, Liza subviridis (Valenciennes, 1836), in the mangrove areas surrounding Thachin estuary, Changwat Samut Sakhon

Study on the food items and feeding habits of the greenback mullet, Liza subviridis, were investigated during July 1997 to May 1998, from the mangrove areas of Thachin estuary, Changwat Samut Sakhon. Stomach contents of 100 specimens of various sizes of samples were examined. Their stomach contents identification could be classified into 20 different types, of these there were 8 species of diatoms. The highest percentage of frequency of occurrence of detritus in the stomach reached up to 72 percent. Gut contents analysis showed that detritus and phytoplankton (mostly diatoms) dominated their diet. Only a few of zooplankton and other animals were detected in their stomachs. From this study there was no distinctive difference in various food items related to various sizes of the specimens.
