What is there and what is happening to it: The distribution, assessment and monitoring of biological diversity and their implications for conservation

Biodiversity has always been important to people, though usually under other names. But it has recently become an issue of International significance, with the signing of the Biodiversity Convention at the Earth Summit in Rio in June 1992. While everyone now agress that biodersity is important, very few countries have a clear idea of what biodiversity they support or what is happening to that biodiversity. A number of international organizations, including UNEP, UNDP and the World Bank, are putting considerable funding into building biodiversity institutions, but guidance is required on what data are required for decision-making, how much effort in basic assessment work is justified, and how responsible agencies can monitor the state of biodiversity in the respective country. Using examples from tropical Asia, the paper provides guidelines on enhancing the role of scientists in implementing the Biodiversity Convention.
