Intercalation of metal oxides into the structure of clay minerals

The applicability of clays from two locations (Sipovo and Kanjiza) in Serbia (Yugoslavia), for the synthesis of Al, Fe, Cu and Zn pillared clays was investigated. Sipovo clay in montmorillonite and Kanjiza clay kaolinite - illite type. XRD pattern shows that the basal spacing of the clay mineral from Sipovo after pillaring process increases from 1.53 nm to 1.77 nm for Al-PILC, 2.21 nm for Fe-PILC and 2.01 for Cu-PILC. The enhancement of basal spacing failed in the case of Zn2+ ions. The synthesis of pillared clays using clay mineral Kanjiza was successful only when using Fe3+ ions, and the basal spacing of clay mineral after pillaring process increased from 1.41 nm to 2.12 nm. IR spectroscopy data revealed the intercalation of alumina oligomer into the montmorillonite silicate layer, which is proved by the shifts of the stretching vibration of Al-OH-Al from 3625/cm to 3650/cm. The catalytic activity of raw clays, as well as of the pillared ones in n-hexane isomerization was negligible.
