There are three Ramsar areas in Serbia (Yugoslavia) - Obedska bara, Ludasko jezero 1997, and Carska bara 1966. Taking into consideration the fact that birds are the main criterion in evaluation and establishment, the paper offers an analysis of significance of the Ramsar Convention for preservation of bird fauna in watery habitats in Serbia (Yugoslavia). For all three Ramsar areas the trends concerning the presence and number of particular bird species have been established - namely, heron, and cormorant - for extended period of time and then compared to duration of various forms of legal protection of these areas. Active protection is recommended as the only appropriate form of protection of birds and their habitats, as well as deployment of material and personnel facilities offered by the Ramsar Convention.
