Pesticide general dose setting for fruit use and their expression on labels: a need to harmonise many complementary approaches between European Union Member States

The registration of commercial PPP drawn from the European Union approved positive list of active ingredients - including the dose expression - is a national compliance that may result in a divergence of dose expression. In some countries a two-tier dose setting is applied in practice. Many approaches are being used and there has been much emphasis on better understanding the physics of more effective spray deposition in modem orchard growing practices. The ramifications of reducing doses or -using the existing one - but more effectively - makes researchers very involved in the spraying technique itself, the type of orchard and its growth stage as well as insect or disease pressures and the level of control that would be adequate. Environmental and other safety considerations are also key components of the dilemma that is faced. The current registration procedures and dose expressions on plant protection manufacturer labels are discussed. Five case studies are summarised using parallel developments from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Norway and UK. General requirements for dose expressions on these labels are outlined. The need for a better harmonisation of common approaches between countries and even dose expression itself- to what is essentially the same goal - should be high priority in the future for, without that unification, there will remain confusion and many opportunities for inappropriate dose rates.
