Enhanced seed quality and beet growt through interactions between microbes, seed and plant

For seed inoculated microorganisms it is clear, that the biological control agent's (BCA's) ability to act fast is crucial for controlling the root rot diseases caused by Pythium ultimum and Rhizoctonia solani. In general, fungal antagonists seem to act too slowly. Therefore, the preferred BCA choices for sugar beet seed inoculation are fast growing dominating rhizosphere colonising bacterial antagonists that act in the soil despite the presence of native microbes. Development of an efficient carrier-on-seed system for dehydration sensitive bacteria such as Pseudomonas ssp. has allowed us to study the efficiency of these bacteria as BCAs as well as mediators of plant growth stimulation (PGSAs). Several Pseudomonas fluorescens isolates have shown promising results as biological control organisms in field trials. The sugar yield of seeds inoculated with a promising PGSA surprisingly varied among the sugar beet varieties tested.
