Mosaik - First experiences of cultivation conrolled according to partial areas

Most agricultural land has zones of varying productivity. The intensity with which these are cultivated should be adjusted accordingly. This means that in areas with a low expected yield the amount of fertilisers and plant protectants should be reduced. In order to gain experience in this sphere, the business sector Agriculture of Suedzucker AG, in cooperation with other institutions, has initiated the project "Mosaik". For the purposes of the project on the land of Gut Luettewitz, 35 km west of Dresden, all cultivation measures from sowing to harvesting are to be carried out specifically geared to the circumstances in partial areas. This means that the specific, local nutrient requirements have to be ascertained according to various different parameters. The reserves of nutrients in the soil and the capacity to replace these will be ascertained locally and specifically by means of automated sample testing and subsequent analysis in the EUF soils laboratory. This facilitates the compilation of a nutrient map of the area which, by taking into account yield maps and other parameters, can be processed to obtain a fertiliser application map. Together with Arge Zeitz and the Verband der Saechsisch-Thueringischen Zuckerrubenbauer (Association of sugar beet farmers of Saxony and Thueringen (registered association)) investigations are being made to establish whether, by sowing sugar beet with variable spacing, differences in soil quality and water supply can at least be partially compensated. Aerial photos were made of the plant stands in order to obtain indications of the nutrient supplies and the differences in yield and to localise stress factors such as diseases or lack of water.
