Production techniques survey of sugar beet areas in Germany since 1994
2000

The concept for the survey was developed by the Coordination Board at the IfZ. The aim is to gather and analyse data related to production techniques used in the German sugar beet area. A questionnaire is sent to the extension service of sugar factories. The questionnaire covers issues from crop production techniques from precedent crop until harvest and transportation of sugar beet. The survey is carried out on a biennial basis, with an additional smaller questionnaire each year to cover issues dealing with pests and diseases. Answers are given as percentage values of the sugar beet area. The data is gathered, processed and evaluated at the IfZ and the results are published in collaboration with regional co-authors in the magazine "Zuckerindustrie". Since the first survey 1994, feedback has been received from all sugar factories. The data is mostly published as average values of the German sugar beet area. A nation-wide view of trends is thus now possible. Some data quoted is based on estimates, because direct information from the farmer was not available. Careful interpretation of data is for this reason necessary. Annual documentation of variations of pests and diseases is helpful for special analysis. This biennial survey has become an increasingly valuable source for advisors and sugar factories and will be continued.
