Monitoring of nitrogen content in soils and sugarbeet leafs in central Italy

Nitrogen is the more important element in nutrition of sugarbeets. Excess or deficiency of nitrogen may create problems in the production and in the quality of sugarbeets. We retain that development of a correct criteria for the formulation of nitrogen fertilization plan is very important for improving the quality of sugarbeets in the area of middle of Italy. In our opinion the evolution of N-CaCl2 index and the rainfall level are the more important factors for evaluating the correct amount of nitrogen fertiliser for sugarbeets cultivation. In 1999 SADAM Agronomical Service initiated a triennial program of research concerning monitoring Marche area, one of the most important sugarbeet production areas in the middle of Italy. We are building a database containing (until now) analytical and agronomical data of about 5000 fields. The poster shows the variation of N-CaCl2 in soils index from summer (July and August) to winter (January) just before seeding for the year 1999 and 2000. It also shows the fertilization the farmer practised, the corresponding value of nitrogen in leaves at the 2-4 leafs stage and the alfaN-content in sugar beets. The aim is to create an historical database containing agronomical information to drive the farmer in nitrogen fertilization.
