Current results concerning boron supplies for sugar beet in Southern Germany

The supplies of boron for sugar beet in Southern Germany was established on the basis of over 500.000 soil analyses by EUF from the years 1990-1999. In order to ascertain regional differences in the supplies of boron, the results are given for the local community level. The average boron requirements for sugar beet on the basis of the EUF soil analysis are 1,2 kg B per ha and range from 1,6 kg in the region around Kassel to 0,7 kg B per ha in Rhineland-Palatinate. Dependent upon the region, 50-90 percent of the land under sugar beet has a recommendation for boron. There is a variety of reasons for the regional differences in boron requirements. For instance, light soils with 0,5 mg B per kg have a 60 percent lower boron content than medium heavy soils. In dry areas the boron content of comparable soils is higher than in damp regions. Organic fertilisers have no significant impact on the boron content of the soil.
