Polish hop growers have relied upon the scientific knowledge of the Instytut Uprawy Nawozenia i Gleboznawstwa Pulawy. Its reseaech work have been aimed to solve problems through a holistic approach. Breeding of new hop cultivars is linked with agrotechnical elements (cultivation, fertilization,plant protection) and automation of the picking and drying process. Breeding programs are aimed at obtaining new cultivars that can meet the needs of both the market and the processing and brewing industries. Regarding the trend among breweries to reduce the alpha-acid content in beer, there is a special attention paid to the aroma properties. Those Polish cultivars such as Marynka, Sybilla or Oktawia have the correct qualitative and quantitative composition of hop essential oils and are highly suitable for the production of beer featuring a fine hop aroma.
