Monitoring of DDT and its metabolites in the Elbe catchment area (Review)

This article summarizes the results of monitoring the contamination of fish tissues by DDT, DDE, HCB and HCH in the Czech Republic from 1979 to 1999. When comparing the results with the hygienic limit value established in 1997 (0.5 mg/kg of edible tissue), it can be stated that the concentrations of contaminants measured in fish from intensive rearing and from ponds were below this limit value, while those of some fish species (especially fatty ones) catched in rivers were above this value indicating thus there are localities highly contaminated by these pollutants.
