Research on Estonian forests and forestry was launched in the late 18th century. Before the birth of this independent Republic of Estonia, it was conducted mainly by social organizations. More systematic research was started at the University of Tartu in 1920, the Forest Research Institute of the University of Tartu in 1936 and the Natural Resources Institute in 1937. In the period following World War II, forest research was reinstated at the University of Tartu; in addition, the Sector of Forestry was founded as a specialized scientific structure at the Institute of Zoology and Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR in 1947. The latter developed into the principal forest researc institution in Estonia, operating as a departmental science institution subordinated to the Ministry of Forestry from 1963 to 1996. In 1996, the institution was incorporated into the Estonian Agricultural University. Both the Institute and the Faculty of Forestry of the EAU have laid more emphasis on the traditional topics of forest science. Ecological research has been more prioritized at the University of Tartu, the Institute of Zoology and Botany and the Institute of Ecology of the Tallinn Pedagogical University
