The chemical composition and nutritive value of home-bred timothy, red clover - timothy mixture and fodder galega silages have been studied in comparative trials in Latvia. The crude protein (CP) concentration (18.24 per cent from DM, on average) was higher and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) was lower (53.63 per cent) in galega silage. In timothy and clover-timothy silages the CP and NDF concentrations were 11.49 and 13.23 per cent, 61.06 and 64.49 per cent respectively. The content of acid detergent fibre (ADF) in DM of feed and DM energy values were similar for all the tree silages. Feeding these silages to Latvia Brown breed cows (n=3x17), the higher milk yield was produced with galega silage: on average 26.31 kg energetic corrected milk (ECM) per cow per day was obtained during 5 months of the accounting period while in other groups of cows the produced average milk yields were 23.14 and 24.87 kg ECM with timothy and clover-timothy silages, respectively. As there was no need to supplement galega silage with bought concentrated feed (sunflower extracted meal) for protein and energy balance as it was necessary in cases with other feed rations, the cost of feed when calculated in the produced milk yield was by 9 to 15 per cent lower in the group of cows fed on galega silage
