Chlorophyll content and biomass yield of maize (Zea mays L.) as influenced by gypsum application and its interaction with ammonium sulfate and single superphosphate (SSP)

The effect of gypsum application, and its interaction with ammonium sulfate and single superphosphate (SSP) on chlorophyll content, and biomass yield of maize was studied. The experiment was conducted on a chernozem with neutral pH status at Kharkov State Agricultural University, Ukraine. The experiment was laid out in randomised complete block design with four replications on a plot size of 90 m square. Results of the experiment showed that application of ammonium sulfate and SPP in combination with gypsum increased chlorophyll content and biomass yield of maize when compared with ammounium sulfate and SSP applied as sole treatments. Application of gypsum per se gave a significant biomass yield difference compared with the check plot and was found to be even better than SSP at the rate of 80 kg P subscript of 2 O subscript of 5 ha-1. Moreover, the experiment revealed that biomass yield of maize linearly increased with the increment of chlorophyll content in the leaves. However, the partial budget analysis confirmed that the two treatments, which gave the highest biomass yield, were not economically justifiable.
