Twenty seven strains of Rhizobium ciceri, isolated from arid and semi-arid areas of Morocco and tested on chickpea cultivar 37, have shown a high diversity in their infectivity and efficiency. From the most efficient strains which enhanced shoot dry weight by more than 60 per cent of TN control, strain RCH 60 appeared to be more performant. These bacteria have also shown a high variability in their salt tolerance. The salt inhibitory concentrations of their growth varied from one strain to another and as a function of salt nature. The sodium (Na) was more toxic when associated with chloride (Cl) than with sulphate (SO4)the potassium (K) with chloride as well as with sulphate exerted a weak inhibitionthe calcium (Ca), in lower concentrations and independently of accompanying anion, affected severely the growth of all strains. In the presence of NaCl at 1,5 per cent, survival of the most tolerant strain RCH 60 was not affectedby contrast, in the presence of CaCl2 the viable cell number was strongly decreased
