In Hungary the breeding of grape varieties resistant to fungal diseases started in 1949. The widespread use of Franco-American hybrids in crossing programs began in Eger in 1957. The earliest result was the variety Zalagyongye (1970), followed by other valuable varieties. Propagation of these varieties was intensive in recent decades. Variety Zalagyongye became the most spread of all. The main reasons of it's popularity are resistance, early ripening, and fine taste. These varieties have expanded the varieties assortiment not only in Hungary, but also in a number of other grape-producing countries.
