The potential of land resources in four priority development areas of rice, soybean, and maize in North Sulawesi Province

Английский. The increasing production of rice, soybean, and maize can be applied in potential lands, which are not optimally and inefficiently utilized. To support the program, an evaluation of land suitability was conducted at four priority development areas, namely Marisa, Paguyaman, Limboto, and Tondano in North Sulawesi Province. The first three areas have relatively dry climate which are dominated by fertile soils of Inceptisols, Mollisols, and Alfisols, while Tondano has a wetter climate, and is dominated by fertile soils of Andisols. The results of evaluation indicate that the first three areal are suitable for increasing production of rice, soybean and maize, while Tondano areas is suitable for increasing production of maize. Of the total potential areas, about 36,000 ha not been used for extensification of food crops. Although the present area is cultivated, their utilization is considered not optimal and still inefficient as indicated by traditional land management, and relatively low productivity. It is therefore still possible to increase productivity of these commodities, such as by optimizing the use of available water resources, use of high-quality seeds, improvement of cultivation techniques, and application of conservation farming on sloping lands. индонезийский. Peningkatan produksi padi, kedelai, dan jagung dapat dilakukan pada lahan potensial yang belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal dan efisien. Untuk mendukung program tersebut, suatu evaluasi kesesuaian lahan telah dilakukan pada empat daerah prioritas pengembangan, yakni Marisa, Paguyaman, Limboto, dan Tondano di Propinsi Sulawesi Utara. Tiga daerah yang pertama memiliki iklim relatif kering, dan didominasi oleh tanah-tanah Inceptisols, Mollisols, dan Alfisols. Sedangkan Tondano beriklim lebih basah dan didominasi oleh Andisols yang subur. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan ketiga daerah pertama berpotensi untuk peningkatan produksi padi, kedelai, dan jagung, sedangkan Tondano berpotensi untuk peningkatan produksi jagung. Dari total luas lahan potensial, sekitar 36.000 ha belum dimanfaatkan untuk lahan pertanian ekstensifikasi tanaman pangan. Meskipun sebagian lahan potensial telah diusahakan, pemanfaatannya belum optimal dan efisien yang ditunjukkan oleh tingkat pengelolaan lahan yang masih bersifat tradisional dengan produksi relatif rendah di bawah rata-rata nasional, sehingga masih terbuka peluang untuk peningkatan produktivitas ketiga jenis komoditas tersebut. Peningkatan produkasi dilakukan antara lain, dengan pemanfaatan sumber-sumber air, penggunaan bibit unggul, perbaikan teknik budi daya, dan aplikasi usaha tani konservasi pada lahan-lahan berlereng. Kendala utama penggunaan lahan antara lain, keterbatasan air, wilayah berlereng curam, kondisi tanah berkerikil/berbatu-batu, dan sebagian sifat tanah yang kurang menguntungkan
