Variation in Germination and Early Root Growth Characters in Some Forage Legume Species as Affected by Drought Stress

This study was conducted to assess the effect of water stress on the germination performance and early shoot and root growth of four forage legumes species collected from north Jordan. The forage legumes under investigation are : Medicago rotata, Medicago scutellata, vicia villosa and vicia sativa. The study consisted of three experiments, one was conducted in the laboratory and the other two were conducted under the greenhouse condition using the facilities in the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). In experiment 1, the seeds of the four legume species were germinated in the laboratory using five concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The water stress treatments that were simulated by PEG are: 0.0 Mpa, 0.5 Mpa, -1.0 Mpa, -1.6 Mpa and -2.0 Mpa. In the second and third experiments, the seeds of the four legume species were germinated in the laboratory and transplanted in pots with different soil moisture levels. The soil moisture levels are: field capacity (FC), 75%FC, 50%FC and 25%FC. In the first experiment, the completely randomized design with 4 replicates was used, whereas the randomized complete block design with 4 replicates was used in experiments 2 and 3. Statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA, and mean separation was following DMRT at 0.05 probability level
