The most fertilite soils in Lithuania are heavy loam occuring in the northern part of the central plane. However, the abundance of clay particles smaller than 0.02 mm in size in those soils results in the manifestation of negative properties, such as excessive cohesion and stickness. One of the major factors reducing cohesion of such soils and maintaining high potential soil fertility is humus. There are various ways for increasing humus content, but the most important one is extra application of organic matter and a possibility for a longer period of soil coverage with plants. A positive humus balance is maintained by an annual dose of farmyard manure not lower than 10 t ha*[-1). Experiments were carried out over the period 1986-2001 at the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture's Joniskelis Experimental Station.
