Performance evaluation of BPRE [Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension] heat pipe dryer
2002
Belonio, B.T.
Results showed that the BPRE Heat Pipe Dryer obtained a mean drying rate ranging from 1.65% to 3.18% moisture content per hour for the two drying strategies and two levels of moisture content. Moisture reduction rate per hour ranged from 9.94% to 19.39% per hour while the drying system and dehumidifying efficiencies ranged from 75.01% to 107.23%, and 48.48% to 55.23%, respectively. Energy cost ranged from P35.99 to P79.65 per batch. Milling quality assessment gave a milling recovery ranging from 60.56% to 62.04% and a head rice recovery ranging from 42.02% to 57.70%. The single stage drying strategy with wet sample paddy was found to be the optimum operating procedure for the dryer in terms of the technical as well as the economic performance of the dryer. Cost analysis of the BPRE Heat Pipe Dryer gave a break even volume of 111.22 tons for a custom rate of P1,243.75. A net income of P34,294.17 BPRE Heat Pipe Dryer and P40,282.48 for the Conventional BPRE Flash Dryer could be realized after a pay back period of 9.40 and 2.48 years, respectively
