Nematicidal activity of some plant species

Nematicidal activity of 27 plant species were evaluated for the control of Meloidogyne graminicola, one of the most destructive parasitic nematodes of rice. Findings showed that 13 plant species exhibited high nematicidal activity. These were mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), marikit (Calotropis gigantea), marigold (Tagetes erecta), papaya (Carica papaya), Kuyot (Dioscorea hispida), Euphorbia (Euphorbia heterophylla), asunting (Casia alata), Centrosema (Centrosema pubescens), Crotolaria (Crotolaria incana), bagalunga (Melia dubia), neem (Azadirachta indica), makabuhay (Tinospora rumphii), and buyo (Piper betle). Neem, papaya, Euphorbia, and Kuyot (powder, extract, chopped fresh leaves/tuber) were more potent than the other plants even at only 25% concentration and significantly reduced the number of root galls in rice plants and nematode density in the soil
