Geo-spatial analysis of corn supply and demand situations in the Philippines

Yellow corn accounts for 58% of all domestic corn produced in 2001. It is the most common and preferred grain in the poultry and swine feed industry. White corn serves as staple food in the Visayas and Mindanao [Philippines]. This study introduces the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) tools in assessing in-country yellow and white corn supply and demand using the past five-year provincial data (1997-2001) averages. The greatest deficit in yellow corn occurs in Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog regions in Luzon, Cebu in the Visayas, and Davao in Mindanao. Major shortfall for white corn is located in NCR [National Capital Region], Quezon and Bulacan in Luzon, Cebu and Negros Oriental in the Visayas, and Agusan del Norte in Mindanao. This methodology can be beneficial in evaluating the domestic corn distribution system and can be used as a decision or discussion support tool for policy and development program planning
