Effect of high temperature at heading stage on growth and yield of four rice varieties

The pot experiment was conducted at the Tsukuba International Center (TBIC) JICA, Japan during 1998. Four rice varieties i.e. Sasanishiki, Koshihikari, Milyang 23 and IR13 were treated with high temperature at the heading stage. The fertility of the spikelets, yield and yield components were determined at the maturity stage. The results showed that fertility in the four rice varieties were decreased with high temperature treatments. The average fertility of all varieties at normal temperature and with high temperature treatments was 92.6 and 35.8% respectively. The most sensitive variety to high temperature treatment was Sasanishiki (Japonica type). The fertility reduction for the varieties was 66.9% (Sasanishiki), 58.9% (Koshihikari), 54.5% (Milyang 23) and 60.4% (IR13). The effects of high temperature on grain yield, number of panicles/hill and number of spikelets / panicle were significantly different among the varieties. In particular, IR13 (Indica type) had clearly high number of spikelets/panicle than the other varieties. However the 1000 grain weight and ripening %age were similar between the varieties.
