Utilization of corn cobs for the production of furfural and active carbon

Cellulosic and carbonaceous materials on hydrolysis and activation yield furfural and active carbon-compounds of high utility. For the present study corn cobs were hydrolyzed with various concentrations (14% and 16%) of H2SO4 and HCl in the presence of added salt catalysts (2%) in the ratio of 1:3 & 1:5 for different digestion periods (100 min and 140 min). Furfural was extracted from the distillate by simple distillation. The residue after extraction was directly activated at 700 degree centigrade to get active carbon. Adsorption efficiency of the resulting active carbon was determined by using iodine and methylene blue decolourization indices. Maximum recovery yield of furfural was obtained with 14% H2SO4 at 140 minutes digestion time keeping 1:5 solid liquid ratio in the presence of AlCl3 as catalyst. However, for active carbon maximum percentage yield was obtained with 14% HC1 at 100 minutes digestion time keeping 1:5 solid liquid ratio in the presence of CaCl2 as catalyst.
