Root zone salinity management using different skimming dugwells with raingun sprinkler irrigation

Most of the agricultural areas of Pakistan are facing the twin menace of waterlogging and salinity. Whereas, irrigated areas especially most of the Indus Basin is having the problem of a thin freshwater layer underlying with saline water. One of the major sources of salt buildup in these areas is the application of saline underground water, through deep tubewells. Therefore, most of the SCARP tubewells have been shutdown at the farmers request due to saline water disposal. Now to extract the shallow freshwater for irrigation purposes without affecting the underlying saline water skimming wells are used. In the present study, the performance of different skimming dugwells was evaluated and their effect on soil salinity was determined using raingun sprinkler irrigation method. The performance of dugwell with sprinkler irrigation method was found very successful for solving the salinity problem and stopping further contamination of the freshwater resources by upcoming. The elect of seasonal variations were found more prominent on soil salinity. An increasing trend was found in soil salinity in the topsoil in the summer months. The soil salinity remained sustained as a whole.
