Study of variation in agronomic traits among cotton cultivars

The objective of the study was to compare the selected varieties for their agronomic traits, to see difference among themselves and to determine the stability of each variety with its certified traits. For this purpose three cultivars of cotton. (Gossypium hirsutum L) namely; FH-900, NIAB-Krishma and CIM-482 were grown. Eight agronomic traits viz., number of days to 50% flowering, final plant height, number of sympodial branches per plant, number of leaves per plant, number of days to 50% bolt opening, number of bolls per plant, weight per boll and seed cotton, yield per plant were measured. Analysis of variance showed highly significant results for all varieties under study, except for number of days to 50% boll opening and weight per boll comparison of means also revealed highly significant results for all traits. Similarly, ranges for all varieties, differ for all traits. Thus, it was confirmed that varieties differ from each other. Comparison of the traits studied, with given certified values showed that three of the varieties have been deteriorated regarding their genetic purity.
