Effect of different mulching materials and irrigation intervals on the growth, yield and quality of tomato cv. Peshawar local (Roma)

Experiment was conducted to study the effect of different mulching materials (white polyethylene, Black polyethylene, saw dust) with different irrigation intervals (5 days, 7 days, 10 days, 15 days) on Peshawar local tomato at Horticulture Research Farm, NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar during 1996. The application of black polyethylene resulted in maximum number of flower clusters per plant (15.09), number of fruit per plant (12.53), fruit weight per plant (970.72 g), yield (15.33 tons per ha). Mulching materials reduced the number of days to flowering (37.57). Different irrigation intervals showed significant effects on all the parameters except the number of days to flowering. Maximum number of fruit per plant (12.48), fruit weight per plant (1055:09 g), fruit size (21.65 cm), plant height (44.05 cm), and total yield (15.43 tons per ha) were recorded in treatments irrigated at 10 days intervals, while maximum number of flower of clusters per plant (13.47) was observed at 15 days intervals of irrigation. Generally it can be concluded that black polyethylene mulch with 10 days intervals of irrigation may produce better yield of tomato cultivar Peshawar local.
