Selected lessive soils (Luvisols) and black earth (Phacozems) characterized by the precipitation type of water economy underwent analyses in order to determine their sorption curves of water through soil (pF) for individual genetic horizons and potential and effective appllicable retention for layers at 0-50 cm and 0-100 cm. Their total retention capacity values within the entire profile (0-2 m) were also calculated. Water capacity values were found to be in a close relationship with soil texture and organic matter content. These values varied highly at individual horizons and layers. The determined total retention of soils is relatively high and allows storage of precipitation water almost to full extent
