Evaluation of growth and yield of two forms of sweet basil grown from seeds and transplants
2002
Nurzynska-Wierdak, R. (Lublin Agricultural University (Poland). Dept. of Vegetable Crops and Medicinal Plants)
In the experiment, begun in the period 2000-01, the effect of two aromatic basil forms and the methods of cultivation (from seeds and transplants) on plant growth as well as the yield was studied. A significant effect of the form on the morphological features selected and yield was observed. Basil plants with green leaves were characterized by a stronger growth, a more abundant flowering, a higher and better quality of yield as compared with the plants of the other form. The basil cultivation methods discussed did not affect the plant features in any significant way. The highest yield of fresh and dry weight (23.7 t/ha and 4.6 t/ha, respectively) was obtained from plants grown from transplants. Basil grown from seeds was characterized by a higher content of essential oil (0.58 percent)
