To have an impact on agricultural production, productivity and farmers' welfare, it is of vital importance to forge effective links between the institutions and relevant actors involved in the process including farmers. Cognizant of this fact, the Debre Zeit Agricultural Research Center (DZARC) financed by the Cool Season Food and Forage Legumes Project and the Joint Vertisol Project (JVP) established a total of seven Farmer Research Groups (FRGs) in two woredas of Eastern Shoa Zone during the 1999 cropping season. Of these, the wheat variety FRG in the selected watershed area of Gimbichu woreda is discussed. The objectives of this study were to form client-oriented alliances with farmers in the process of wheat variety development and transfer. Twenty-three members of the wheat variety FRG residing in the area were involved. Each farmer planted an improved durum wheat variety called 'Kilinto' and their local variety side by side using a ridge and furrow (RF) seed bed. The mean grain yield obtained by farmers from the improved variety was 2330 kg/ha cf. the local variety at 1930 kg/ha. The marginal rate of return of the improved variety was found to be 1627%, which is economically profitable.
