Efficiency of resources use in the production of winter crops among the farmers of the River Nile State

This study analyses the efficiency of the resources use in three governorates in the River Nile State, namely, Shendi, Ed-Damer and Abu Hamad. The study compares the use of land, labour and capital among the three governorates. Cobb-Douglas production function was used for estimating the paramerters to be used in comparing allocative efficiency. The main findings of the study were that land, labour and capital are used inefficiently in the three governorates. However, Shendi utilizes land and capital more efficiently than Ed-Damer and Abu Hamad, because the emphasis is on cash crops. On the other hand, Ed-Damer governorate utilizes labour more efficiently than Shendi and Abou Hamad, due to large farm size and less dependance on hired labour. Abu Hamad governorate was less efficient in the utilization of all resources compared to other governorates because of small farm size and cultivation of relatively low value crops (mainly wheat). The inefficiency in the use of resources can be explained partly by misallocation of resources among different crops, the risk-averse nature of the farmers, unavailability of physical inputs and shortage of credit to buy them. To increase efficiency in the use of these resources it is recommended that the present crop composition be reconsidered, supply of input at the apporpriate time and facilities for credit be made available
