Post-harvest quality and storability of twenty onion cultivars at "Jabal Marra" area - Sudan

Twenty onion cultivars were evaluated for post-harvest quality and storability, during 1991/92 and 1992/93 seasons, at Dunkuch Centre, Jabal Marra Rural Development Project, 36 km east of Zalingei town. The cultivars comprised 5 local, 4 Indian, 6 American and 5 hybrids. The sound bulbs, after being well curried, were stored at ambient conditions (30+6 deg C and 33-88% r.h.) in a traditional onion store. The cultivars varied significantly in their storability, and accordingly, they were classified into five groups. The local cultivars had the best keeping quality and storability; they stored well for 6 months. The Indian cultivars came next and stored for 4 months, and the American and hybrid cultivars had the least keeping quality and sotrability. Significant positive correlation was obtained between dry matter content and total soluble solids and storability. Also, significant positive correlation was obtained between the colour of the bulb and degree of pungency and storability. Percentages of weight loss, sprouting and rotting of bulbs during storage varied with cultivar and month of storage. The were affected by the prevailing temperature, relative humidity and rainfall. The cultivars with high total index scores for quality and yield (885 and more) and with good keeping quality and storability (4 - 6 months) could be recommended for "Jabal Marr" area. These include the local cultivars, Kamleen, Saggai Red and Nasi, and the Indian cultivars, Red Bombay Ringo, Nasik Red and NU-53
