The history of vegetable research in the Slovak Republic ties up with the research station in Hurbanovo-Sesiles, which underwent many organizational changes since its establishment in 1950. After the state enterprise Semex was dissolved in 1994, the Research and breeding institute for vegetable and special plants, a state enterprise, became an independent institute with its seat in Nove Zamky. This institute after privatization in 1997 operates under the name Vegetable Research Institute Ltd. (VRI). It represents the only institute in the SR, which completely specializes in vegetable and related issues. The current institute performs the following main activities: research, breeding, genetic resources of plant cultures, production of seeds of vegetables and medicinal plants, consultancy, provision of services, production and education activity. The institute cooperates with many domestic and foreign institutions and reports published in this issue of the auxiliary ledger also show the result of this cooperation. Since 1980, the institute issues its scientific and research works on an irregular basis. The publication is issued in a bilingual version, in Slovak and English. This will ensure its use not only in Slovakia, but also abroad. It include following papers: The foundation of cultivation of selected vegetable types with orientation to direct seeding.
