Isolation and antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds of evening primrose (Oenothera biennis L.)

Ethanol-ethyl acetate extract of evening primrose (Oenothera biennis L.) meal was separated into six fractions using Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography. The content of total phenolics and antioxidant activity in sunflower oil in each isolated fraction was determined. A pronounced antioxidant effect was noted at the fractions with high content of total phenolics. Gallic acid, protocatechuic and their methyl and ethyl esters were identified in these fractions by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry
